In Malindi
Step out of the garden and into one of Kenya's most historic coastal towns. Here are a few of our favourite places to wander.
Vasco da Gama Pillar
A coral pillar erected by the Portuguese explorer in 1499, one of the oldest European monuments on the African coast. It stands on a rocky headland just south of town, with the Indian Ocean breaking at its base. A short walk from the resort and a wonderful spot for sunrise.
Portuguese Chapel
A small 16th-century chapel built by the Portuguese, quietly preserved among the palms. A humble little building that carries centuries of Malindi's layered Swahili, Arab and European history. A peaceful stop on a morning walk through town.
Malindi Falconry
A rehabilitation centre for birds of prey right in the centre of Malindi. Get up close to falcons, eagles, owls and vultures, many of them rescued and nursed back to health. A memorable visit for families and anyone who loves wildlife. The team is happy to let you hold a bird on the glove.
Malindi Town & Markets
Wander the busy streets, the fresh-fish market and the craft stalls piled with spices, peanuts and colourful kitenge. A swirl of Swahili, Arab and Italian coastal culture. The best time to visit is early morning, when the fish market is at its liveliest and the air is cool.
Where to eat in Malindi
Malindi has a wonderfully mixed dining scene, from Italian beachfront kitchens to Swahili street food. Here are a few well-loved spots our guests come back raving about.
01Rosada Beach Restaurant
A famous beachfront Italian kitchen on the shore, great for long lunches and sundowners.
02Baby Marrow
Italian favourites and wood-fired pizza in a relaxed garden setting in town.
03Sapori
A cosy spot blending Ethiopian and Italian cooking, set among giant baobab trees. Much loved by locals and visitors alike.
04Bar Bar Restaurant
A relaxed open-air restaurant with a charming white facade, potted palms and string lights. A popular spot for drinks and casual meals in the heart of Malindi.
05Olimpia Club Malindi
A historic Italian establishment on Silversand Beach with a pool, sunbeds, beach parties and live music nights. Italian and seafood.
In Watamu
A short drive south, Watamu is a quieter stretch of white sand and turquoise lagoons, protected by a marine national park.
Gede Ruins
A mysterious 13th-century Swahili town swallowed by forest. Stone mosques and houses reclaimed by monkeys and ancient trees.
Mida Creek
A tidal mangrove creek alive with flamingos, crab plovers and a boardwalk through the forest at sunset.
Local Ocean Conservation
Watamu's sea turtle rescue, run by Local Ocean Conservation since 1997. Hundreds of turtles are rescued and released each year in partnership with local fishermen and Kenya Wildlife Service. Visit their centre to meet recovering turtles and learn about nest protection along these shores.
Arabuko-Sokoke Forest
The largest remaining stretch of coastal dry forest in East Africa. Home to rare birds, golden-rumped elephants and golden cats.
Safari to Tsavo
Tsavo is Kenya's largest national park, a vast wilderness of red dust, baobabs and big herds of elephant. A day trip or overnight safari from the coast is one of the great experiences of a Kenyan holiday, and our concierge can arrange a guided trip with a trusted operator. Expect to see elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras and, with luck, much more.
Tsavo East is the closer of the two sections to Malindi, roughly a two-hour drive inland.
Full-day and overnight safaris can be arranged with experienced guides and comfortable lodges.
Best visited in the early morning or late afternoon, when the animals are most active.
