A garden by the sea
The Lawford began as a small colonial-era guesthouse on the shores of Malindi, where the warm waters of the Indian Ocean meet a wide, gentle beach. In those early days, guests arrived by boat and by road to find a handful of rooms set among coconut palms and frangipani trees.
Over the decades, the property grew into a beloved resort. Villas and suites were added, swimming pools were carved into the gardens, and a beach bar took its place at the water's edge. Yet through every change, the spirit remained: unhurried, personal, and rooted in the land.
Today, The Lawford is one of Malindi's most treasured hotels, a place where Italian coastal charm meets warm Kenyan hospitality, and where every guest is welcomed, in the words of our tagline, to the Garden of Kenya.

Our grounds are not landscaped, they are lived in. Decades-old palms, frangipani and bougainvillea grow as they please, and the gardens slope naturally down to the sea. The garden came first. We simply built around it.

A hotel is only as warm as the people who run it. Our team is a mix of longtime Malindi residents and coastal Kenyans who have made The Lawford their own. Many have been with us for years, and it shows in the way they remember a returning guest's favourite table or morning coffee.

The garden we tend
We have always believed that a hotel on the Kenyan coast has a duty to the coast itself. Our approach is simple and practical, rooted in the garden that gives us our name.
Grown and caught locally
Our kitchen buys from Malindi's fish market and nearby farms. Less distance from sea and soil to plate, and a fairer deal for the people who fish and farm here.
A garden that feeds itself
We compost garden waste, harvest rainwater for the grounds, and let the natural canopy shade our pools and pathways. The garden largely looks after itself, the way it always has.
Protecting the shore
We work with Local Ocean Conservation and local beach cleaners to keep our stretch of Malindi Beach pristine. The turtles that nest nearby are everyone's responsibility.
